In the today’s music, it is hard to ever come with something original. But I must say, The Magnificent Ruffians did it! There are many aspects to being a dope rhymer. Of course being able to write a good song is important but what many people tend to forget is the ability to freestyle is also needed to be a real emcee. It is that “real” feel that a lot of rappers are missing today. Magnificent Ruffians wanted to bring you an album with no rules, no 16 bar standards, no one saying our song has to be under 3 minutes, no clean versions for radio stations, no adlibs… just raw hip-hop shit! I found out about this project from one of my DJ friends, (DJ Gutter) and am glad it crossed my path. The video is shot from in the recording studios where they are recording and you get to see how the artists get in their spiritual mode. Record is now available for Reason. You can get the software as a standalone application or a duo package that integrates fully with Reason giving you audio recording capabilities. It is about time! It is now easier than ever to add audio tracks into Reason by simply creating a new audio track and arming it for recording. I always felt that this was the one feature Reason was missing when I started using it back in 2001, I think it was Reason 1.0? Although the feature is great I still find it very disappointing that it took Propellerheads this long to add the feature.

One thing is not to be confused when you purchase and install Record along side your Reason installation. From that moment on you will be using Record and Reason is essentially a plug in inside of Record. It appears to integrate seamlessly from what I see. For some reason this is just something that upsets me because at one point I was a die hard Reason user but was forced to look into another way to record audio. I heard about ReWire and found out that Cakewalk’s Sonar had it. I had to under go a huge learning curve just to learn the software just so I could integrate audio tracks with Reason. Now, 9 years later I see a feature they should have had back then! Well, all that aside… I am sure many users will be happy with Record. Time to start saving up!

The new SONAR V-Studio 100 by Cakewalk is taking portable music production to another level. When used with computer you get a 24/96k audio interface with high-quality mic preamps and a DAW controller. Without your computer you get an 8×6 digital mixer an SD recorder to play back beats at your gig or to record those inspiring moments on the road or at home when you don’t feel like firing up your computer. Plus it comes with the VS Production Pack of effects and instruments for Mac and Windows.

To prove a point, Cakewalk took the V-Studio 100 to Sha Money’s One Stop Shop Conference in Phoenix, AZ and put it to work. With all the up and coming MCs and producers in attendance, Cakewalk figured One Stop Shop was the best place to test this product out with the Hip Hop community. To paraphrase one of the original gangstas “If we can make it there, we’ll make it anywhere.”

Cakewalk’s resident producer Lil Shamrock recorded a beat on the spot and then threw down the gauntlet, challenging the MCs in attendance to come up and record their rhymes on the fly while the beat was playing back from the V-Studio 100’s SD card.

This months “Song of The Month” comes from an artist that goes by the name of Grin Danilov. The song is called Heavy Xmas. Grin brings a unique style of breaks and beats which was mixed and mastered in one of Germany’s studios. I really enjoyed this piece of music. It is like a blend dance / trance music mixed with some drum breaks.

My favorite local music store just did a major move… Now at first, I was a bit disappoint as I am sure a lot of their clients were? But I must say, the move was a very good thing. They went from what I describe as a small whole in the wall shop they had been in for over 20 years and moved into a great location in Santa Ana, CA. When I first walked into the new location I had a good feeling. It was no longer a whole in the wall, it felt like a super store.

Even though their new location is much larger then the old location it still has their personal touch with the same familiar faces I have seen for years. They now have a full keyboard section, drum machines, bass sections, guitar section, lesson room and from what I hear… they are working on a Pro Tools studio. The studio is mainly to show Pro Tools off to their clients in hopes of urging them to buy. I have always respected the employees at Jim’s Music because they are very knowledgable, they spend their time with you, share knowledge and you leave feeling like they care. I would highly recommend stopping by, meeting the staff and seeing the great location.
