I finally took initiative to learn how to make custom User Drum Kits on the Motif ES. This article is a description of how to go about doing it. Not to say the sounds on the Motif ES are poor, because they are far from that, but sometimes you want to use you own drum sounds right? Follow this guide and you will be ready to produce tracks with your own drum sounds every time you load your Motif ES without having to load the drum sounds each time. If you have any trouble following along, have question or comments please feel free to drop me a line via email or comment this post. I am assuming you have the drum sounds you want to use already loaded onto your SmartMedia Card? So let’s get started…
VOICE MODE
1. Select a USER VOICE that you don’t mind over writing.
2. Press JOB.
- Press F1 [INIT].
- Press ENTER / EXECUTE.
- Are you sure? Press YES.
- Press VOICE again to come back to the VOICE screen.
3. Press FILE.
4. Press F3 [LOAD].
5. Select the directory where the files are that you want to load, I called mine “DRUMS.”
6. Change TYPE to WAVEFORM.
7. Select the first WAVEFORM you want to load.
- Leave all the settings as they are but change the KEYBANK to C1.
- Press ENTER, the sound you selected will load onto the C1 key.
- Hit the C1 key to confirm the sound has loaded. If no sound plays back, repeat the steps above (1-7).
8. Select the second WAVEFORM you want to load
- Leave all the settings as they are but change the KEYBANK to C1#.
- Press ENTER, the sound you selected will load onto the C1# key.
- Hit C1# to confirm the sound has loaded. If no sound plays back, repeat the steps above (1-7).
9. Repeat the steps until you have all the sounds you want assigned to all the different keys changing the KEYBANKS as you go.
- Example: C1, C1#, D1, D1#, E1, F1, F1# and so on….
SAVING THE KIT FOR AUTO LOADING AT POWER ON
Follow this step-by-step procedure for saving an ALL file for having it autoload each time you turn on the Motif ES.

- Change the CURRENT parameter to CARD.
- Press F2 [SAVE].
- Set the file TYPE to “ALL.”
- Create the file Name you want (for the autoload to work you must make the name “AUTOLOAD” or else it will not work.
- Navigate to a the directory where your drum sounds are stored on your SmartMedia card to save your AUTOLOAD file.
- Press ENTER.
- Without changing the directory Press UTILITY.
- Press F1 [GENERAL].
- Press SF4 [OTHER].
- Set the Autoload parameter to read ON.
- Press SF5 [GET] to set the current directory on the SmartMedia Card so the Motif ES knows where to load the AUTOLOAD file from each time.
- Press STORE.
