Album Review: Relapse by Eminem
Album: Relapse
Artist: Eminem
Songs: 20 songs Total
Runtime: 1.2 hours
Eminem prepares to release his first album in more than four years. Now 36 years old Eminem sheds some light on his dark struggle with drug addiction and the affects superstardom has brought him. With 20 new songs that have been very well produced by producers such as: Dr. Dre, Trevor Lawrence Jr., Mark Batson, Dawaun Parker and Eminem himself you will find yourself feeling sentimental for the hip-hop superstar. The Album also has a few disturbing skits starting off with a skit called "Dr. West" with Eminem and his therapist discussing life after rehab and how to deal with the temptations that surround him. The Dr. ends up being the devil and talks him into using again. The skit leads into a song called "3AM" about a murderer who takes drugs and wakes up later to find out that he killed people without even realizing it. The song was produced by Dr. Dre and has a dark feel that you would expect for the song.
"3AM" leads into a song called "My Mom" which is produced by Dr. Dre and is about Eminem’s mom and goes into the reason why Eminem is the way he is. Talking about how he grew up around a mom who put drugs in all his meals and drinks. The hook goes, "My mom love valium and lots of drugs, That’s why I am like I am, Cuz I’m like her, because my mom love valium and lots of drugs, that’s why I’m on what I’m on cuz I’m my mom!" Wonder how Miss Mather will take that one? I’m sure it was expected? The next song on the album again, produced by Dr. Dre is called "Insane." Now this one is disturbing! A twisted song about being molested. You have to here this for yourself. I won’t go too much into that one! "Bagpipes From Baghdad" is the fifth song on the album and seems to be a fun song. This song was produced by Dr. Dre and Trevor Lawrence Jr. and sets Eminem up with a perfect foundation to rip people apart.
Moving on to number six on the album, "Hello" was produced by Dr. Dre and Mark Batson. After being gone for over four years Eminem writes a song to reintroduce himself. The album seems to discuss a lot of drug and alcohol use hence the name, "Relapse." Hopefully Eminem can stay away from that part of his life now and bring us some new music. The next skit on the album is called "Tonya" and was produced by Dr. Dre and Eminem himself. This skit is pretty twisted. Reminds you of why you should never hitch-hike. A girl gets into a car, you hear some duct tape and then she flips. Just imagine the rest! Song number eight on the album is called "Same Song And Dance" and was produced by Dr. Dre and Dawaun Parker. This song is a recap of the skit previous to it. Talking about picking up celebrities and making them his murder victims. Another song for Eminem to be himself and cause controversy and rip on everyone he possibly can. This is song number nine on the album and is called "We Made You" and was produced by Dr. Dre and Eminem. Another one of those fun and catchy songs that will get stuck in your heads for days.
"Medicine Ball," produced by Dr. Dre and Mark Batson is the tenth song on the album and this one is controversial for sure. Eminem raps in a voice like Christopher Reeves. A must listen for sure… Song number eleven is actually another skit with Paul Rosenburg and the skit in called, "Paul." Paul called Eminem and gets pissed because of some of the things that have been said on the album, especially the Christopher Reeves part. He tells Eminem that he doesn’t have his back on this album and hangs up on him! Another dope song on the album is "Stay Wide Awake" and was Produced by Dr. Dre. Eminem gives a shout out to Darkside on this song, hahahaha! Check it out if you don’t believe me. This is a dirty sex song!
To keep it moving, Eminem does a song called "Stay Wide Awake" and was produced by Dr. Dre. The beat on this song is pretty dark and scary and definitely sets the mood for the dark lyrics that Eminem drops. He also spits his verse with a pretty unique style, especially for Eminem. A song we can all relate to, well maybe all of us? "Must Be The Ganja" which was produced by Dr. Dre and Mark Batson. The title says it all I guess you can say. Eminem talks about of Marijuana aka gangja. The song also features Dr. Dre on the first verse. Song number fifteen on the album is another skit. This skit is pretty out there because it is true story about Eminem’s overdose. The skit is called "Mr. Mathers" and produced By Dr. Dre and Eminem. I really think the production on this one was pretty well done. It kind of puts you into the situation and sets you up for the next song.
"Deja Vu" was produced By Dr. Dre and touches on Eminem’s overdose as well. He talks about all the drugs he used and how the problem progressively became worse over time. Before he knew it, he overdoses. You can also read about this in his book, "The Way I Am," which is actually a pretty good read. I got a whole new respect for Eminem after reading his book. A lot of what you thought you knew about him is actually wrong. I recommend read the book. My personal favorite song on the album is called "Beautiful" and was produced By Eminem himself. The beat is smooth and mellow and the lyrics are pretty deep. Again touching on all his addiction issues, Eminem mentions that he can’t face the fact that he might be done with rap and needs to find a new outlet. I’m sure he will be just fine. Keep producing those beats Eminem, I know I am feeling the work your doing. Song number eighteen on the album is called "Crack A Bottle" which features Dr. Dre And 50 Cent was produced By Dr. Dre. I’m not sure if you remember a few months back there was a leak on the Internet with this song with Eminem rapping Dr. Dre’s verse as a guide track. One of those industry secrets that they don’t want to get out. This is a song about drinking and having a good time, "So, crack a bottle!"
The last skit on the album is called "Steve Berman." This is a pretty funny skit that is a continuation or should I say follow up of when Eminem shot Steve Berman before he could tell him he loved his album. The tables are turned and Steve pulls a gun out on Eminem and tell him to get the f*ck out of his office. The last song on the album is called "Underground" produced by Dr. Dre. The beat on this song is dope. It has a waltz feel to it and is pretty much Eminem saying "I’m back!" There is a funny secret part at the end of this song too. It’s Eminem singing different words for "We Made You."
