J. Ohm Biography

How I got into music is? Well I have always being around it I guess... Since I can remember, the radio is always on either in the rents car or in the house. There was always music going on and most of the time it was the oldies but goodies stations. So, I got exposed to a bit of soul, a little bit of funk, lots of doo-wop, some classic rock, etc. No one in my family played any instruments and it wasn't until I was about 15 or so that I wanted to play guitar. Finally, when I turned 16, my parents bought me a nice Alvarez Acoustic guitar. Of course, my grades weren't good enough to "deserve" lessons so I plunked around to the Dead Kennedy's, some Fugazi and a couple other punk bands a 7th grade friend had turned me onto.

Frustrated and unsatisfied, I kind of quit trying. Then one day while skateboarding my buddy's half pipe we built, some dudes threw in a Primus tape and I was blown away! Then I really started to get into the Red Hot Chili Peppers bass! I had to get me one of those four string wonders! So, I took my acoustic and a bit of my allowance down to the local music store and traded for a nice used Yamaha Bass and a crappy little Crate Practice Amp! I started to play along with more of my music, and the bass seemed more natural to me.

Later I started jamming with some buddies that played guitar. I'd skip class and go down to the band room and get lessons from the dude who played bass in the school band. Pretty soon, I knew how to hold the damn thing, how to pull and smack those fat strings. Hook, line, and sinker! I had to get a band together. Having just met the new kid in soccer class, I found out he played drums and he even had a nice kit. My buddy Steve played guitar as well. We got together once or twice, and 'The Tom Bodet's from the Motel Six' was born. We all got involved with this youth group with this guy Tom, who was a youth coordinator of sorts. He started putting youth events together and we would play every show.

So, we started writing songs. By the time we had to get our first flyer together, we realized T.T.B.F.T.M.S. was way too long of a name and it didn't make us sound too serious about our music. Thus, 'Fertile Turtle' was born. Much more serious, right?! Well, our tunes were pretty much based on silliness and fun, so it stuck. And everyone thought it was funny. We rocked shows for about a year or so. I started getting more into heavy stuff like Faith No More, The Jesus Lizard, and some local Midwest talent. The guys wanted to go one way with the music, and I wanted to go the other, or so it seemed. So I left and Steve's brother, Paul stepped in to fill my shoes. We all remained friends and I even went to some of their shows after a while. It was weird to see someone else play the songs I wrote but I was cool with it. By this time, I had been jamming with many people, and had musicians lined up to start another band but no one was quite as serious as I was about it, and nothing ever panned out as far as a new band. I made plenty of four track tapes with me, a guitar player, and a drum machine, but that is only so fun for so long.

Well, high school graduation came and went, and I moved out the house. Whew! Free at last. I moved into a three bedroom with my best friend from high school, Erica (who lives in the bay area now) and my good friend Jeanette, and her boyfriend Paul. Yup, it was the same Paul. Weird, but we got along and stayed out of each others way. I believe we only signed a six month lease so after six months, I moved to another place. A party house filled with drum players, and guitar players. They even had a jam room set up, sweet! But you can't start a band with a bunch of drunks either. I met a bunch of people at the many parties we would have every weekend and moved in with some kids that had just started going to raves. After a couple weeks, I got invited to go along to one. I was amazed. I think I just ate some E, and watched the DJ's spin all night. I had to learn that! So, I started looking for turntables.

Well, in my little home town in the middle of Wisco, nobody had a clue what tables were. But eventually, I got the gear and started teaching myself how to match a beat. Once I learned that, it was all over. Traded all my bass gear for a new mixer, a laser, and some other junk. Sad, I miss my old amp the most. Before long, I was pretty good and I was the only one in my town to own a pair of decks. So I started rocking every house party I could. When I wasn't spinning, I was at some rave watching the DJ's spin. Then somebody at a house party recognized my talent and started a production company to throw raves locally. Suddenly, I was a rock star in my town, everyone knew me it seemed. But that wasn't really all that good. I sold drugs for a living, and people started getting busted around me. So, I thought it was a good time to get out. I moved down to Madison and started working at the local ski hill, Tyrol Basin.

Then winter was over, and I needed work so, a buddy of mine who had been working with this traveling tile company said he could get me a job. So I was off to Greensboro, Northern Carolina then, to Grand Rapids, Michigan. All the while, doing as many shows as I could. About the time I moved down to Madison from Wausau, I was getting into hip hop and rap. I would buy records and listen to them, but beat matching hip hop was tough, so I kept playing techno. I started buying drum machines and synthesizers and mixers to make my own techno. Then I moved to Seattle and no one here liked techno they all wanted trance and house, both of which I hated at the time. So, I gradually started playing more hip hop. Then, at a house party, I met my buddy Erik (Enkrypted). He was a turntablist of sorts and he could freestyle. So, we'd tag team some hip hop for a while, then he'd get on the mic and I'd spin instrumentals. Then, Sammy (Samcam) showed up to one of these parties and these two cats already knew each other. They had done shows together and they were working on recording some stuff.

By this time, I had almost enough gear to record and produce stuff. So, my motivation changed! I wanted to make a hip hop album. And these guys were down so eventually, after rocking party after party with these guys, I had enough gear so I did a remix of one of the tunes they had produced / recorded. We sat down and talked about working on a project together. About a year and a half later, we've got about 25 demos recorded. My passion for hip hop seems to grow every day. As a Union Marble Mason, I can expect to retire at age 65 and die two years later from lung cancer or silicosis. Not how I want go out so, I decided I want to be a full time musician. And that's my number one goal in life right now. The story continues...
